May already0

How does a year go so quickly?  Only 4 weeks and a new semester will begin, the first cycle of Yr 12 exams wil lbe over andwe will be embracing a new range of chemistry study.

Now is the time to have on hand focussing on keeping up with the final few topics that we are studying, and the other having a go at past exam questions.  All of these are on SIMON< together with  the examiners report.

Cheers

Sunday1

A lovely winters day – cold and rainy… a perfect day for doing past exam papers!  The answers to the trial exams that were available on Friday are now on Simon for you to go over.  If you have any particular topics to review at the tutorial tomorrow, please send me an email.  The tutorial will go from 3.45 (ish) unitl 5 or 5.30 depending when you have to leave.

Enjoy your day

Unit 3 is soon to be a past imperative0

Only 7 sleeps until THE DAY… keep on taking good care of your selves … drink lots of water, eat well, get enough rest….. and keep doing past exam questions and going over them.  Please come and talk to me about questions you are finding difficult and the ones you are finding ok, too.  I have added a link of a quiz on biomolecules under the biochemistry link.  I will check other sites over the next few days and add ones that look useful.

Have fun and enjoy the journey!

Welcome to 20102

Hey everyone!

After a long break, here we are again in the wonderful year of 2010!  Since I may find some wonderful online resources that are not accessible through SHC and/or facebook, I have finally activated this once again.

So, I look forward to seeing you all on Tuesday for our class.  A reminder that the morning, 9am until 12 noon, is a regular class in which we will be studying new material.  In the afternoon, we will be discussing your questions, as well as doing revision, including past exam questions.

Hope you had a wonderful retreat. Enjoy your weekend.

Go Cats!

All the best for tomorrow4

Only one more day of this year’s course – the examination tomorrow.  Best wishes to you all.  Whatever you have done and not done, give it your best and see what happens.  Be sure to read each question carefully and show how you got your answer (section B only)  There are two questions that are on material we haven’t covered in any detail – one is about the best way to prepare oxygen commercially and the other about ways of protecting metals from corrosion. You may want to have a quick look.  The stoichiometry questions have a few interesting bits – simply go back to the basics of the formula you know and have a go.   I will have it corrected by Thursday, so if you want your mark, please see me then or send me an email.

All the best for the exam – I am really excited about it and looking forward to marking it, too!  And if you would like a few moments of light hearted relief, check out the Ode to Joy link under the ‘Zing’ section

Almost there2

Today was great fun!  I really enjoyed the enthusiasm you had for the experiments and how well most of you cleaned up after yourselves.  Please make sure you finish the written part over the weekend so that you can hand your Prac book in on Monday.  Also, it would be best for all the Gas Law calculations to be finished by Monday 9th, as well.

With the exams getting close, I would like you input on how to best organise the revision sessions we have.  Tuesday should see us finish the course, even though a little condensed on some areas.  So please think about this and let me know.

There will be tutorials next week on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons – I have a meeting on Monday.

Thanks – have a wonderful weekend

Going green is great2

Thanks so much for the time and effort you put into the presentations that have been done.  I appreciated the interest you took in the topics and how well you were able to link in the principles of Green Chemistry.  I learned something new from each presentation and thank you for that.

In a few weeks, we will all have time to relax and take it easy (you earlier than me!).  Before then, though, there is more to learn and time for revision, too.  I have put a copy of last year’s examination (and the answers) in the Chemistry Infobox for you to download or print.  I will also see if I can get copies of several other ones, so that those who wish to can prepare well for the examination.  Going over the Area of Study 1 Test is also highly recommended, so that you can find out what you can improve on.

To those with Unit 4 exams coming up – all the best (and don’t slacken now – you are so close to the goal)

In the meantime, enjoy the beautiful spring weather when you can.

Spring time2

As you investigate your green chemistry assignment, it is also a good time to go over your Area of Study 1 test to see how well you did in some areas, and what you can improve.  It can be very helpful to see what errors you made, especially ones that you realise were avoidable by taking more time to read the question, or pause for a moment.

Remember, too, how great you will feel after the exmaination in 6 weeks time, knowing you have prepared well by doing lots of revision now, rather than waiting until the last minute.

Do take time, too, to enjoy the warm weather and nurturing rain, perhaps some exercise.  Celebrate, too, how much you have learned this year and how little time there is before it is holidays once again.

See you soon

Diary questions0

Hi folks – looks like you made reasonably good use of your time when I was away – thankyou!  Many of you had questions about how to write ionic equations.  I will go over it briefly on Monday in class, and then focus on that at the lunch time tutorial on Wednesday.  There will be a tutorial after school on Monday – if you are planning to attend, please let me know in class (14/9).

This week, we will be studying redox reactions and also I want to give you some details of your next extended investigation SAC which is on green chemistry.  So, still lots to do.

Keep up the good work (or begin now if you haven’t yet)

Magnificent mole calculations!8

How awesome you all are!  Using the mole formula and associated calculations as if it was second nature – well done.  Thanks for your persistence and dedication to your learning.

Now we have started stoichiomety, you will use these formula more and more.  Please do the Questions 1 – 8 from Ch 15 over the weekend – don’t wait until later in the week.  This way you can consolidate what you learned today and find out more easily what questions you might have.  There is a copy of the PowerPoint in the infobox, if you misplace yours.

Happy stoich-ing … and remember that you can ask your questions here by posting a comment!  Looking forward to hearing from you ….
